“Fine music is able to express something of the mystery of Christ’s love for us and ours for him.”

– Pope Benedict XVI

Let’s awaken the song of the Church.

Equip

Commonly, Catholic musicians hear the call to serve long before they are formed in the skill to do it with excellence. CatholicMusician.org provides approachable resources to form musicians in liturgy, devotion, musicianship, technology, spirituality, chant, and more.

Form

St. Bernard wisely said, "Today there are many in the Church who act like canals, the reservoirs are far too rare ... You too must learn to await this fullness before pouring out your gift." CatholicMusician.org provides videos and courses that enhance the spiritual dimension of our musical lives, from guided meditations of music to practical wisdom on the interior life.

Connect

At the heart of CatholicMusician.org is a community of musicians with a shared desire for beauty and excellence. Through our free online community platform you can meet fellow musicians around the world, collaborate and share creative projects, pray together, attend livestream events, and more.

Our Story

Founded in 2016, The Vigil Project began as a group of Catholic musicians sharing life together. What resulted was a devotional movement of music that has since toured over 400 parishes and communities in the United States, Europe, and beyond.

As our team traveled from parish to parish, we began to see that the Catholic Church has many questions about music that don’t often get asked in the isolation of an individual parish. We saw musicians and pastors grappling with questions like:

  • How do I steer the talent that already exists in the parish? Do we have a talent problem or a training problem within our music ministry?

  • How do I make changes to encourage the Church’s vision for music and pastorally guide parishioners who are used to music “the way it’s always been”?

  • I desire to serve as a Catholic musician, but I’m not feeling called to serve the liturgy. Where do I go and what do I do?

  • Can I have a career in music ministry? How do I pursue that?

  • How do we build a culture of devotion at the parish? They come for Sunday morning Mass, but I’m not sure they’ll come again during the week to pray.

This is where our story together begins. We spent four years traveling the world to get to the heart of the Lord’s gift of music. Alongside a team of professional videographers, we captured interviews and conversations with clergy, religious, scholars, liturgists, historians, recording engineers, touring musicians, songwriters, composers, conductors, classical musicians, folk musicians, scientists, and more…

The result, made possible with the Lord’s provision, is unfolding moment by moment on CatholicMusician.org.

Our Team

The Vigil Project exists to invite Catholics into a deep encounter with God through music. Based in New Orleans, our nonprofit apostolate formed in 2016 when a group of artists bonded over a desire to elevate Catholic music. Today, The Vigil Project is a collective of 30 musicians that has released ten studio albums, tours to hundreds of parishes across the US and Europe, and will soon be releasing a first-of-its-kind documentary film series called Meaning of Music. At the heart of our work is forming Catholic musicians to serve the Gospel with excellence and creativity. We elevate the work of local Catholic artists through musician retreats, workshops, an online Catholic Musician Community platform, and in journeying with pastors to improve the music at the parish and household level.
